Microsoft announced that Skype will go ad-free in its latest update, as revealed in a recent blog post. The update eliminates ads from all parts of the platform, including Skype channels and the main chat interface.
Microsoft stated that this change is in response to user feedback, aiming to create a “cleaner and more user-friendly” Skype experience. This decision comes amid a broader industry trend of increasing ad integration in various platforms.
While the “Today” section and pre-existing newsfeed will remain, they will no longer be accompanied by ads. Users also have the option to remove the newsfeed tab through the settings menu.
Additionally, the update enhances Skype’s AI capabilities. The desktop app now features an upgraded AI image creation system, accessible from the chat window or the top bar. This system offers a “more intuitive and visually appealing” interface, and images will expand when clicked. Despite these changes, the functionality remains similar to the previous image creator.
Another significant update is the integration of the OneAuth authenticator with the iOS app, a feature already available on Android. OneAuth replaces the old sign-in system, enabling automatic login for users already signed into other Microsoft apps like Teams. This streamlines the login process, reducing the need for multiple passwords.
The update is available to all participants in the Skype Insider Program, with the rollout beginning today. Microsoft advises users to check for updates periodically, as it may take a few days to reach everyone.
