Elon Musk, known for reshaping industries and stirring public debate, is now setting his sights on education. In Bastrop, Texas—a growing hub for Musk’s business operations—the billionaire is funding a private Montessori preschool called Ad Astra. Recently granted a state permit, the school is cleared to educate up to 21 students aged three to nine. However, Bloomberg reports that the facility shows no visible signs of children or teachers yet.
Positioned near Musk’s enterprises, including The Boring Co., a SpaceX Starlink production site, and a building under construction for X (formerly Twitter), the school appears aligned with Musk’s broader vision of intertwining work and community. Job postings for Ad Astra hint at its purpose, emphasizing its role in educating employees’ children: “While their parents support the breakthroughs that expand the realm of human possibility, their children will grow into the next generation of innovators in a way that only authentic Montessori can provide.”
This isn’t Musk’s first foray into education. He has previously tied schooling initiatives, often under the Ad Astra name, to his business ventures. The latest iteration suggests Musk’s ambition to foster an environment where innovation extends across generations.
Critics, however, highlight the broader implications of tech leaders shaping educational models. Musk joins peers like Jeff Bezos, who established a network of preschools, and Mark Zuckerberg, who backed personalized learning through Summit Learning. Bill Gates, too, has long influenced U.S. education policy, albeit with mixed outcomes such as the Common Core standards.
Musk’s efforts come alongside his political activities, including vocal support for Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign and public criticism of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in education. This convergence of business, politics, and education raises questions about the motivations behind such ventures and their potential impact on American schools.
As Ad Astra takes shape in Texas, its development will likely serve as a microcosm of Musk’s broader influence—challenging traditional approaches and sparking debates about the intersection of innovation, education, and leadership.
