Ferrari’s first fully electric production car, the Luce, has sold for $40 million at an RM Sotheby’s charity auction in Monterey, California. The result set a new record for the highest price paid at auction for a new car, surpassing the $26 million record established by a Ferrari Daytona SP3 in 2025.
The auctioned Luce is designated “Chassis 0,” making it the first production chassis from Ferrari’s electric car program. All proceeds will go to educational initiatives supported by the Ferrari Foundation, a US-registered public charity.
RM Sotheby’s has not publicly identified the buyer. The car will return to Maranello after the sale and is scheduled for final delivery during the first quarter of 2027.
First Production Luce Gets a Bespoke Specification
The Ferrari Luce is the Italian carmaker’s first fully electric model and was developed with designers Sir Jony Ive and Marc Newson through their LoveFrom design collective. Ferrari formally introduced the production car in May 2026.
The auction example was customized through Ferrari’s Tailor Made program. It features a Madreperla Semi-Gloss exterior developed specifically for the car, using a pearlescent pigment that produces green-to-violet reflections depending on the angle and intensity of light.
Inside, Ferrari used Perla Le Mans metallic leather with Grigio Corvara secondary elements instead of its traditional black treatment. The car also receives dedicated wheels, bespoke brake calipers, an optical-white Ferrari badge treatment, and a plaque identifying it as Chassis 0.
Ferrari says the production Luce uses four electric motors, one for each wheel, along with a 122 kWh battery. The model represents Ferrari’s first entry into series-production battery-electric vehicles.
Luce Breaks Ferrari’s Own 2025 Record
The $40 million result replaces another Ferrari at the top of the new-car auction rankings. In August 2025, a one-off Daytona SP3 Tailor Made sold for $26 million at the same Monterey event, with its proceeds also going to the Ferrari Foundation.
The overall record for any car sold at auction remains significantly higher. RM Sotheby’s sold one of two 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupés for €135 million in 2022, making it the most valuable car ever sold at auction.
