Threads, Instagram’s counterpart to Twitter, is stepping up its game by introducing live scores for sports events, beginning with the NBA.
Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, revealed on Friday, March 22nd that Threads is currently testing this feature for NBA games, with plans to expand to more leagues in the future. This move is seen as a direct challenge to X (formerly Twitter), which has been providing live sports scores for about ten years. Threads aims to draw in sports fans who typically use X for real-time game discussions and updates.
Enhancing Fan Interactions
Beyond just offering live scores, Threads is enhancing user engagement by allowing followers to tap on a team’s logo to jump into conversations about that team, connecting with like-minded fans. According to Threads, as reported by TechCrunch, this feature simplifies the process of participating in discussions about users’ favorite teams.
Basketball, in particular, has grown to be one of the most talked-about subjects on Threads, with NBA-related threads among the most active sports communities on the app. The goal is to establish Threads as the go-to destination for sports conversations.
Making Sports Conversations More Accessible
The live score feature is designed to be user-friendly; you can search for a game on Threads to find its start time, current score during the game, and final score after the game concludes. This initiative is part of Threads’ broader strategy to compete with X, following the recent rollout of a “trending now” feature to all U.S. users.
By introducing trending topics, Threads aims to mirror X’s ability to surface ongoing timely discussions, further positioning itself as a rival platform for real-time social interaction.
