Apple Reaches First Union Agreement with US Retail Employees

Apple has reached a tentative contract agreement with unionized employees at its Towson, Maryland retail store, marking a significant milestone as the first such agreement for the company in the United States.

The store, which became the first Apple retail location in the country to establish a formally recognized union two years ago, now stands at the forefront of a new chapter in Apple’s labor relations.

The agreement, which is set to be voted on by the approximately 85 employees represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ Coalition of Organized Retail Employees (IAM CORE) on August 6, includes several key provisions for the three-year contract:

  • Average pay raises of 10% throughout the contract period, along with higher starting wages for 80% of job classifications.
  • Scheduling improvements aimed at supporting a better work-life balance for both full-time and part-time members.
  • A severance clause to provide additional protections for employees.
  • Limits on the use of contracted employees, ensuring more stable employment conditions.
  • A transparent disciplinary process, providing clearer guidelines and protections for employees.

The union and Apple have been in negotiations since January 2023. In May, employees at the Towson store voted to authorize a strike, which the union’s negotiating committee described as a demonstration of solidarity and a clear message to Apple. The strike authorization came after the union deemed earlier negotiation outcomes as “unsatisfactory.”

This tentative agreement is viewed by the union as a strong first step toward further gains for its members. The negotiating committee highlighted that the agreement gives their members a voice in their futures and is a critical development in their ongoing efforts.

The Towson location is one of only two Apple retail stores in the US that have successfully unionized, with ongoing contract negotiations also taking place with a unionized store in Oklahoma City.

The outcome of these negotiations and the upcoming vote on the Towson agreement could set a precedent for future unionization efforts and labor relations within Apple.
