OpenAI and News Corp Announce Partnership to Train AI with Journalistic Content

OpenAI has entered into a significant multi-year global partnership with News Corp., an agreement that grants the AI company access to a wealth of journalistic content from News Corp.’s extensive portfolio, including prestigious outlets like The Wall Street Journal and The New York Post.

Announced on Wednesday, May 22, this collaboration aims to utilize News Corp.’s current and archived articles to not only improve responses within the ChatGPT platform but also to potentially train OpenAI’s AI models.

Under the terms of the agreement, OpenAI will incorporate News Corp.’s media content directly within the ChatGPT interface, allowing the AI to generate more informed and accurate responses to user inquiries. This initiative is part of a broader effort by OpenAI to enhance the capabilities of its artificial intelligence technology through access to high-quality, professionally curated content.

Moreover, News Corp. will contribute its journalistic expertise to uphold high standards of journalism within OpenAI’s offerings.

Robert Thomson, CEO of News Corp., emphasized the transformative nature of the partnership, suggesting it could set new benchmarks for truthfulness and ethical standards in digital media. He praised OpenAI’s leadership, including CEO Sam Altman, for their commitment to preserving the integrity and value of journalism within the tech industry.

This partnership announcement follows closely on the heels of similar collaborations between OpenAI and other major platforms. For instance, Reddit disclosed an agreement with OpenAI just a day later, permitting the AI firm to train its models using data from Reddit’s unique content streams. This deal also introduces AI-enhanced features to Reddit’s community, with OpenAI becoming an advertising partner on the platform.

Similarly, earlier in February, Google formed an alliance with Reddit for AI model training purposes, using Reddit’s Data API.

Additionally, last week marked the launch of OpenAI’s latest advancements, including a new AI model and a desktop version of ChatGPT. These updates were introduced alongside an enhanced user interface and were publicly discussed by Mira Murati, OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, in a livestream.

According to Murati, the new GPT-4o model showcases significant improvements in speed and expanded capabilities across various media types, including text, video, and audio, setting the stage for future developments such as interactive video chats with ChatGPT.
