X is Testing a New Feature to Block Links in Replies to Tackle Spam

X, formerly known as Twitter, is developing a feature aimed at reducing spam by allowing users to block links in replies to their posts, Engadget discovered.

This update, revealed by Nima Owji, a notable independent app researcher known for his accurate scoops on unreleased features, includes an option for users to prevent others from including links in responses to their tweets.

Christopher Stanley, Senior Director for Security Engineering at X, has confirmed the development of this anti-spam feature. According to Stanley, this functionality is designed not only to deter spam bots but also to limit promotional activities by real users who might use replies to direct traffic to their own sites.

While this feature could help maintain the cleanliness of discussions on the platform, it also raises concerns about restricting users from sharing legitimate links, potentially hindering efforts to correct misinformation.

Owji’s track record includes the discovery of several other initiatives by X, such as an in-app currency aimed at monetizing content for creators and new ID verification mechanisms introduced following issues with rampant impersonation. Additionally, he has reported on X’s plans to enter the job market sector, potentially positioning the platform as a competitor to LinkedIn for verified organizations.
