Harris Campaign Aims to Repair Democratic Party Ties with Crypto Sector

In a strategic move to mend relations with the cryptocurrency sector, advisers to United States Vice President Kamala Harris have initiated outreach efforts to leading crypto companies. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address and repair the strained relationship between the Democratic Party and the crypto industry.

According to a recent report by the Financial Times, Harris’s team has been engaging with several major players in the crypto space. The targeted companies include:

  • Coinbase: A leading cryptocurrency exchange known for its wide array of digital asset offerings.
  • Circle: A prominent stablecoin issuer.
  • Ripple Labs: A blockchain payments firm known for its digital payment solutions.

The primary goal of this outreach is to foster a more constructive dialogue and develop a regulatory framework that supports the growth of the cryptocurrency industry. This initiative aims to address growing concerns and criticisms related to the Democratic Party’s stance on digital assets.

This shift in approach follows increased support for former President Donald Trump from the crypto industry. Trump, the Republican Party nominee for the 2024 presidential election, has been vocal in his support for cryptocurrencies. This growing support contrasts with the Biden administration’s more cautious stance on digital assets, which has faced criticism from within the Democratic Party.

The outreach effort is partly inspired by a letter signed by Democratic members of the US House of Representatives and 2024 candidates. This letter advocates for a reassessment of the party’s approach to the digital asset industry, urging a move away from perceived antagonism.

Focus on Building Positive Relationships

Harris’s advisers have emphasized that the initiative to reconnect with the crypto sector is not primarily aimed at securing electoral contributions. Instead, the focus is on establishing a positive relationship that could lead to a more balanced and supportive regulatory environment.

This outreach is also part of a larger strategy to reshape the Democratic Party’s image among business leaders. The Harris campaign seeks to counter the perception that the party is anti-business—a sentiment that has gained traction due to the Biden administration’s antitrust actions against tech companies.

By promoting a message of being “pro-business, responsible business,” Harris aims to reassure the crypto industry and other business sectors of the party’s commitment to creating a favorable business environment.

Trump’s Growing Influence and Crypto Support

Former President Donald Trump, who previously expressed skepticism about cryptocurrencies, has recently become a strong advocate for the sector. His keynote speech at the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville, Tennessee, on July 27, underscored his support for the industry.

This newfound advocacy has translated into substantial backing from the crypto community, making it a crucial source of funding for Trump’s campaign. The pro-crypto super PAC Fairshake has raised over $200 million from notable supporters, including Coinbase, Ripple, and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Additionally, Trump’s reelection campaign has received approximately $3 million in cryptocurrency donations since it began accepting digital assets.
