Trump Accuses Harris of Opportunistically Changing Racial Identity During Tense Exchange with Black Journalists

Donald Trump made headlines with a controversial appearance at a conference hosted by the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). During a contentious question-and-answer session, Trump’s remarks about Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity sparked significant backlash and debate.

Trump’s Comments on Harris’s Race

In the midst of the heated session, Trump expressed surprise over Harris’s racial background, controversially suggesting that she had chosen to identify as Black recently for political advantages. “I’ve known her a long time, indirectly,” Trump stated. “And she was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I did not know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black.”

This assertion led to a broader discussion on racial identity and political maneuvering, with Trump further questioning the legitimacy of Harris’s racial identity shift: “Is she Indian or is she Black?” This sparked a flurry of reactions from the audience and panel moderators.

ABC News’ Rachel Scott, moderating the panel, countered Trump’s remarks by noting Harris’s attendance at Howard University, a historically Black institution, underscoring her long-standing connection to Black culture and community. Despite this, Trump dodged direct engagement with the comment.

The term “DEI hire” was also discussed, a phrase increasingly used by some conservatives to challenge the qualifications of people of color in prominent positions by attributing their roles to diversity, equity, and inclusion policies rather than merit.

Responses from Harris’s Campaign and the White House

Harris’s campaign swiftly labeled Trump’s performance at the NABJ event as an “absolute disaster,” with a spokesperson asserting, “This is who he is.” The Vice President’s team continued to work on scheduling a future appearance at the NABJ.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reacted strongly when presented with Trump’s comments during a press briefing, describing them as “repulsive” and “insulting,” emphasizing the personal right to racial self-identification.

The Fact-Checking Controversy

A source revealed tensions arose from the NABJ’s decision to partner with PolitiFact for real-time fact-checking, which Trump’s campaign was not made aware of until after it had begun. This led to accusations of being blindsided, contributing to the strained atmosphere of the event.

In his campaign efforts, Trump has expressed intentions to increase his support among Black voters, aiming for a significant jump from the 12% he garnered in 2020. This strategy was discussed in light of his historical remarks and actions that have been widely criticized by the Black community and journalists alike.

The discussion extended to Trump’s vice-presidential pick, JD Vance, whose comments about “childless cat ladies” have stirred controversy. Trump’s defense of Vance highlighted a focus on traditional family values, which he argued was misinterpreted by critics.
