Nvidia AI Chip Delay Threatens Major Tech Giants

Nvidia‘s upcoming artificial intelligence (AI) chips could face a delay of three months or more due to design flaws, according to a report by tech-focused publication The Information on Friday. This delay might impact major customers such as Meta Platforms, Google, and Microsoft, which have collectively ordered chips worth tens of billions of dollars.

The AI chip company introduced its Blackwell chip series in March, following its previous flagship AI chip, the Grace Hopper Superchip, which was designed to accelerate generative AI applications. Despite the reported delay, Nvidia’s spokesperson stated in an emailed response that demand for the Hopper chip remains strong, broad sampling of Blackwell has commenced, and production is scheduled to ramp up in the second half of the year.

Microsoft declined to comment further, while Meta and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Nvidia reportedly informed Microsoft and another major cloud service provider this week about the delay in the production of its most advanced AI chip in the Blackwell series, as cited by a Microsoft employee and another knowledgeable source.
