The Necessity of a Steam-like Platform for Web3 Gaming Growth

As the Web3 gaming landscape continues to evolve, the need for a platform similar to Steam, which has revolutionized digital game distribution in the Web2 era, becomes increasingly apparent. OKX, a prominent player in the cryptocurrency exchange market, has taken significant steps to meet this demand by launching OKX GameSphere, aiming to bolster the development of the crypto gaming ecosystem.

In July, OKX unveiled the GameSphere platform, designed to facilitate the integration of Web3 elements such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and cryptocurrencies into gaming. This initiative reflects OKX’s commitment to advancing Web3 gaming by providing developers with the necessary tools for incorporating Web3 mechanics, enhancing user experience, and expanding distribution channels.

Jason Lau, Chief Innovation Officer at OKX, noted the positive reception from developers and highlighted the platform’s role in aiding them with various aspects of game development in the Web3 space.

The Gap in Traditional Gaming Platforms

While Steam has been a dominant force in the Web2 gaming market, its infrastructure does not support Web3 elements, which limits the scope of gaming experiences and economic models that developers can create. In October 2021, Valve, the company behind Steam, explicitly banned blockchain-based games that issue cryptocurrencies or NFTs from its platform. This decision has created a void that Web3 platforms like GameSphere are looking to fill.

Contrasts Between Steam and Web3 Platforms:

  • Centralization vs. Decentralization: Steam’s centralized platform contrasts with the decentralized nature of Web3 platforms.
  • Digital Ownership: Steam lacks mechanisms for true digital ownership, which Web3 platforms offer through blockchain technology.

Success and Challenges in Web3 Gaming

Despite the absence of support from traditional platforms like Steam, the Web3 gaming sector has seen significant activity and growth. For instance, Ronin, a blockchain focused on gaming, reported two million daily active users as of July 29, surpassing many other active blockchains. This surge is attributed to the success of games like Axie Infinity, which have cultivated robust communities around play-to-earn models.

However, Lau believes that Web3 gaming is still in its nascent stages, with many games not fully utilizing the potential of Web3 elements. This inconsistency in engagement and the underutilization of Web3 features suggest that there is still much room for growth and innovation in the sector.

Challenges in Web3 Gaming:

  • Engagement Fluctuations: Engagement levels have been inconsistent, with games struggling to maintain player interest.
  • Balance of Web3 Elements: Finding the right balance in utilizing Web3 elements remains a challenge for developers.

Lau emphasizes the need for continued experimentation and a focus on unique game mechanics that can make content both fun and engaging. He suggests that developers should not only concentrate on innovative gameplay but also on cultivating communities by educating players about the benefits of Web3 technology. This dual focus can help break the mold of traditional Web2 games and establish a sustainable, vibrant community in the Web3 space.

The development of a Steam-like platform for Web3 gaming is crucial for the sector’s growth. OKX GameSphere represents a significant step forward in this direction, providing a supportive environment for developers to innovate and expand the boundaries of gaming. As the industry continues to evolve, the integration of Web3 elements will likely become more refined, leading to richer gaming experiences and more engaged communities.
