Google’s recent Made by Google 2024 event introduced several AI-driven features for its Pixel 9 devices, though some of these innovations might have flown under the radar amidst the numerous announcements. Notable among these are the Pixel Studio, Call Notes, and Pixel Screenshots—each offering unique functionalities powered by AI.
Call Notes Summarizes Conversations Available exclusively on the Pixel 9 series, Call Notes automatically saves a summary and transcript of conversations after a call ends. While this feature could be invaluable for those who struggle with recalling details, it raises potential privacy concerns. Google has emphasized that Call Notes operates entirely on-device and that all parties on the call are notified when recording is in progress. However, the effectiveness of these privacy measures remains to be seen.
Pixel Studio: A New Image-Generating App Pixel Studio, another highlight from the event, is a creative tool powered by a combination of on-device generative AI and Google’s Imagen 3 model, which runs in the cloud. Exclusively available on the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the app allows users to generate images based on text prompts, add stickers, and make further edits. Despite its capabilities, Pixel Studio cannot yet generate human faces, likely due to past issues with Google’s AI models. Additionally, it requires a stable internet connection to function fully, despite having an on-device component.
Pixel Screenshots Enhances Searchability For those who frequently capture screenshots, Pixel Screenshots offers a significant upgrade in terms of usability. This new app uses AI to analyze and make the content of screenshots searchable, including any text, people, or objects within them. While Google Photos offered similar functionality, Pixel Screenshots performs this analysis locally on the device. For instance, users can search for specific content like “squirrel” across their saved screenshots, and the app will display relevant results, complete with links and summaries.
These AI-driven features aim to enhance the user experience on Pixel 9 devices, adding convenience and creative possibilities, although some might raise questions about privacy and safety.
