Google Refutes Claims About Discontinuing Fitbit Smartwatches

Google has denied recent reports suggesting that it is discontinuing Fitbit smartwatches, including the Sense and Versa lines. In response to claims made by TechRadar, which implied that Fitbit’s smartwatch offerings would be phased out in favor of the Pixel Watch line, a Google spokesperson clarified that these reports are incorrect. While the company didn’t confirm the release of new Fitbit Sense or Versa models, it emphasized its ongoing commitment to the Fitbit brand and its customers, highlighting the role Fitbit technology plays in the latest Google Pixel Watch 3.

TechRadar‘s original article, titled “RIP Fitbit smartwatches—an end we could see coming a mile away,” had speculated on the future of Fitbit smartwatches, citing the introduction of the Pixel Watch 3 and the apparent shift in focus towards Google-branded wearables. The article suggested that Fitbit smartwatches would be discontinued, with future Fitbit devices being limited to fitness trackers like the Inspire, Luxe, and Charge series. This claim was supported by a previous Engadget report, which quoted a Google product manager indicating that future Fitbit products would concentrate on minimalist, long-lasting trackers.

Despite these reports, Google has maintained that Fitbit remains a significant part of its wearable strategy. The company pointed out that many features of the Pixel Watch 3 are directly derived from Fitbit’s innovations. However, concerns persist among users due to the recent reduction in Fitbit-specific features and services, as well as issues like battery problems with the Charge 5. Although Google has integrated many Fitbit features into its Pixel Watch line, the company insists that it has not abandoned the Fitbit brand.

For now, Google has not announced the discontinuation of any Fitbit product lines, but the future of the brand, especially in its pre-acquisition form, remains uncertain.
