Google Wallet Now Supports California Digital Driver’s Licenses

California has expanded its digital ID pilot program, allowing Android users to add their driver’s licenses to Google Wallet. Previously, digital IDs were available only through the state’s “CA DMV Wallet” app for both iOS and Android. This expansion means that 1.5 million Californians currently participating in the pilot can now opt to store their driver’s licenses in Google Wallet.

“It’s never been easier to keep a digital driver’s license and identification card in California. The state continues to work to offer convenience for those opting into the mobile driver’s license program, now with the option of using Google Wallet.”, Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted in a statement yesterday.

In addition to Google Wallet, California plans to extend digital ID compatibility to Apple Wallet soon, further broadening the options for residents. Despite these advancements, participants are still required to carry their physical IDs. According to information on the California DMV’s website, digital IDs are only accepted at select retail locations and TSA airports. Currently, law enforcement, state government agencies, and many businesses do not accept these digital IDs.
