Assailant in Attempted Assassination of Trump Used Air-Conditioning Unit for Rooftop Access

In the wake of the harrowing attempt on former President Donald Trump’s life in July, new details have emerged about how the gunman accessed his firing position. A source close to the investigation disclosed that the assailant utilized an air-conditioning unit to climb onto the rooftop of a nearby building, offering a strategic vantage point for the attack.

The Assassination Attemp

On July 13, during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a shooter opened fire, injuring Trump with a shot to the ear and tragically killing one rallygoer while wounding two others. The incident was brought to an abrupt end when a Secret Service countersniper neutralized the 20-year-old gunman. The source, who has been briefed on the ongoing investigation, explained that footage from a local ice cream shop’s security camera captured the assailant, identified as Thomas Crooks from Bethel, Pennsylvania, as he climbed onto the roof using an air-conditioning unit approximately 450 feet away from where Trump was commencing his speech.

Despite extensive security measures, Crooks managed to evade detection by using a collapsible-barrel gun, allowing him to navigate through the crowd unnoticed. The building from which Crooks launched his attack was situated outside the Secret Service’s established security perimeter but still provided a clear line of sight to Trump. This building, used by a plastics and glass company, had not been included in the secured zone, highlighting a critical oversight in the security arrangements.

Secret Service’s Response and Fallout

The incident has led to significant repercussions within the Secret Service. The director at the time, Kimberly Cheatle, resigned following calls from lawmakers for her departure. Additionally, multiple officials, including the special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh field office responsible for coordinating the security plan, have been placed on leave. These actions reflect the serious lapses that occurred and the agency’s commitment to addressing them.

Since the assassination attempt, there has been a noticeable increase in security measures at Trump’s events. His first outdoor rally post-incident in Asheboro, North Carolina, saw him speaking from behind bulletproof glass, indicating heightened precautions.
