Midjourney, the AI image-generating platform known for its impressive $200 million in revenue without any venture capital investment, has announced plans to enter the hardware market. The company shared the news in a post on X on Thursday, August 29, stating that its newly formed hardware team will be based in San Francisco.
Although specific details about the hardware focus were not disclosed, clues may lie in recent hires. Ahmad Abbas, who joined Midjourney in February, previously worked at Neuralink and contributed to the development of the Apple Vision Pro, a mixed reality headset. This background suggests a possible direction toward augmented or mixed reality hardware.
Midjourney CEO David Holz brings relevant experience, having co-founded Leap Motion, a company specializing in motion-tracking peripherals. Abbas and Holz have worked together before, adding to the speculation about Midjourney’s future hardware projects.
In the midst of ongoing lawsuits concerning its AI training methods, Midjourney has indicated that it will continue developing AI models, potentially exploring video and 3D generation. The hardware initiative could align with these broader technological goals.
