Huawei is set to challenge Apple with a product launch event scheduled just hours after the expected unveiling of the iPhone 16. The Chinese tech giant announced on Monday that its event would take place on September 10 at 2:30 p.m. Beijing time, aligning closely with Apple’s annual iPhone reveal, which is anticipated to occur on the morning of September 9 on the U.S. west coast. This timing suggests Huawei’s strategic intent to directly compete with its U.S. rival.
The specifics of Huawei’s product launch remain undisclosed. However, Richard Yu, who leads Huawei’s consumer and automotive technology division, hinted at a groundbreaking product. Yu described it as “leading, innovative, and disruptive,” suggesting that it brings to life concepts previously considered unachievable. According to a Google-translated Weibo post by Yu, this product results from five years of investment and development, positioning it as a significant advancement for the company.
Huawei’s competitive positioning has become increasingly aggressive despite the setbacks caused by U.S. sanctions, which severely restricted its access to advanced semiconductors. In the past year, Huawei surprised the tech industry by releasing a new smartphone with a sophisticated chip. This year, the company launched yet another smartphone, signaling its commitment to regaining market share in the smartphone industry.
The rivalry between Huawei and Apple is particularly intense in the Chinese market, where Huawei has seen a resurgence. Research from Canalys shows that Huawei’s smartphone shipments in China grew by 41% year-on-year in the second quarter, the fastest growth among the top five brands. In contrast, Apple dropped out of the top five smartphone vendors by market share in China during the same period, highlighting the growing challenge Huawei poses to the U.S. tech giant.
