2026 Brings Major Medicare Part D Changes: Key2Medicare Is Helping Colorado Beneficiaries Understand What It Means for Their Costs

Medicare changes every year. 2026 brings some of the largest updates to Medicare’s prescription drug benefit in the program’s history. They affect out-of-pocket costs, drug pricing, plan payments, and access to specific medications. Most beneficiaries have not yet reviewed what these changes mean for their coverage.

The most impactful change is the new drug cost cap. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Medicare Part D annual out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 in 2026, down from $8,000 in 2024. Once a beneficiary reaches that cap, their plan covers 100% of drug costs for the rest of the year. The coverage gap no longer exists.

Two other changes also take effect. The federal drug price negotiation program now produces lower prices on selected high-cost drugs, applied directly at the pharmacy. Separately, approximately 35 million Americans are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans in 2026, as per AHA, yet some plans are still reducing benefits and tightening formularies.

These changes don’t affect every beneficiary the same way. The only way to understand the impact on a specific individual is to review their prescriptions, providers, and plan options side by side. Key2Medicare is an independent Medicare advisory service based in Littleton, Colorado. Led by Jenell Sobas, a licensed independent broker with more than three decades of experience in the insurance industry, the service helps beneficiaries compare Medicare Part D plans, Medicare Supplement options, and Medicare Advantage plans at no charge or obligation. The firm represents multiple insurance carriers and has no allegiance to any single company or plan.

This process starts with a thorough analysis of each client’s situation. It assesses their specific medications, preferred doctors, current coverage, and budget. Key2Medicare then maps those needs against every available plan option in the client’s area. The company represents multiple insurance carriers and has no allegiance to any single company or plan. Clients receive a full comparison of options across all carriers. Recommendations are based entirely on fit, not on which plan pays the highest commission.

Timing matters with Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage. The Annual Open Enrollment period, when beneficiaries can switch plans, runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. A plan that worked in 2025 may not be the right choice in 2026 if its formulary or network has changed. Key2Medicare helps clients review their coverage well before that window opens, so decisions are made with full information rather than assumptions carried over from the prior year.
