NASA is set to shut down its NASA TV cable channel in late August, transitioning all its content to the on-demand streaming service, NASA+.
The agency’s modernization efforts are focused on engaging the “Artemis Generation” with a platform that offers four times the viewership of the traditional cable channel since its launch last November. This change aligns with NASA’s broader mission to deliver aeronautics, human spaceflight, science, and technology news more efficiently to a global audience.
NASA+ offers a free, ad-free viewing experience accessible via the official NASA app on iOS and Android devices. Additionally, viewers can use the NASA app on Roku, Apple TV, or Fire TV for a larger screen experience, or visit the NASA+ website to watch on their computers.
What’s Coming to NASA+ in the New Lineup?
In conjunction with the announcement of NASA TV’s closure, NASA has revealed an upcoming lineup of new programming for NASA+. This includes new shows, episodes, and live event coverage.
One of the upcoming documentaries, “Planetary Defenders,” will explore humanity’s efforts in asteroid detection and planetary defense. Another program, “Our Alien Earth,” will showcase NASA scientists as they conduct fieldwork in some of Earth’s most extreme environments, providing insights that may help in the search for extraterrestrial life in the universe.
NASA+ also covers live events, allowing viewers to watch real-time as the agency launches scientific experiments and astronauts into space. This includes missions under the Artemis campaign, which aims to send the first woman and person of color to the Moon.
This transition to a digital-first approach is part of NASA’s efforts to make its content more accessible and secure for the public. In addition to NASA+, the agency recently revamped its websites nasa.gov and science.nasa.gov, providing a new home for research, climate data, Artemis information, and more.
Marc Etkind, Associate Administrator for NASA’s Office of Communications, highlighted that NASA+ aims to inspire and connect with today’s explorers by enhancing the user experience. The service reflects NASA’s commitment to reaching new heights in both space exploration and media outreach.
