Threads Approaches First Year with 175 Million Monthly Active Users

As Threads approaches its first anniversary, Meta’s social media platform has surpassed 175 million monthly active users, as announced by Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday, 3 July.

This milestone comes just two days before the anniversary, highlighting rapid growth from the 150 million users reported in April and 130 million in February.

Launched on July 3, 2023, Threads emerged as a favorable alternative to X (formerly Twitter), particularly after Elon Musk’s significant modifications to the platform. This timing coincides with Musk’s recent declaration that X now boasts 600 million monthly active users, half of whom are daily users, though it remains unclear whether this figure includes bots.

As part of the announcement, Meta provided insights into how people are using Threads. According to Meta:

  • Most users favor text, with 63% of Threads posts being text-only.
  • Images are also prevalent, with one in four posts containing at least one image.
  • Over 50 million Tags have been created, with the most popular being PhotographyThreads, BookThreads, and GymThreads.

While the sheer number of monthly active users is an important indicator, it does not fully encapsulate Threads’ performance. The integration and promotion of Threads within Instagram likely play a significant role in its user acquisition.

Since its inception, Threads has added several features by popular demand, including a web app, trending topics, and an edit button, aiming to enhance user experience while consciously avoiding political content—a contrast to X, which continues to be a hub for live event discussion.
