Apple Celebrates 2024 Olympics with New App Features

Apple has updated the Apple Maps app in Paris in preparation for the 2024 Summer Olympics, starting on Friday, July 26.

The update includes custom, hand-built 3D landmarks for permanent venues such as Parc des Princes and Centre Aquatique Olympique.

Additionally, iconic sites like Gare de l’Est, Pont d’Iéna, and Place de la Madeleine are now rendered with more detail. For the first time, the app displays pop-up locations for temporary venues, souvenir shops, and public gathering sites, aiding attendees in finding important places.

To assist visitors, all game locations and ceremony sites have special icons, and the app shows the latest updates on road closures and advisories due to the games. There are curated Maps Guides for restaurants, hotels, and shopping, with contributions from Le Bonbon, Le Fooding, Radio France, Madame Figaro, and My Little Paris.

Apple has also rolled out a range of features to enhance the viewing experience both in person and online. The App Store is celebrating the Paris 2024 Olympics by promoting the official Paris 2024 Olympics app for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will also showcase popular events and apps throughout the Olympics.

Special Olympics-Focused Content on Apple Media

In addition to Maps updates, Apple plans to feature stories about popular events like gymnastics and swimming in the App Store. It recommends downloading the official Paris 2024 Olympics app for real-time updates. Sports-themed mobile games and health and fitness apps will also be highlighted.

Full Olympic event coverage will be available through the Peacock and NBC Sports apps, downloadable from the App Store. Peacock will offer daily Olympic recaps for U.S. fans, including customized playlists of highlights from the previous day’s events. The NBC Olympics Hub in the Apple TV app will provide quick access to NBC coverage. Viewers can also find coverage via the Sports tab in the TV app and the Apple Sports app.

Apple Podcasts will feature shows and episodes celebrating sports and the power of gathering in Paris. Apple News will provide curated coverage of the events and the athletes, along with an event schedule. Apple Music plans to publish a Guide to French Music, an in-depth editorial feature on French musical genres, set to go live later this week. There will be special Olympics-focused collections in Apple News, Apple Podcasts, and Apple Music.

Olympic Event Schedule

The Summer Olympics will commence with the Opening Ceremony on Friday, July 26, at 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time (7:30 p.m. Paris time).

Soccer games will start on July 24, with other sports like badminton, handball, rowing, volleyball, fencing, field hockey, shooting, diving, and gymnastics beginning on July 27. The events will continue until August 11.
