Former FTX executive Ryan Salame is contesting his guilty plea related to felony charges of campaign finance and money-transmitting violations. On August 21, Salame filed a petition for a “writ of coram nobis,” a legal motion seeking to overturn his conviction post-conviction, arguing that federal prosecutors violated an agreement not to pursue his fiancée, Michelle Bond.
Salame entered a guilty plea in September 2023 to two felony charges under the premise, he claims, that the government would cease its investigation into Bond’s involvement in campaign finance irregularities. Despite this alleged assurance, Salame asserts that the investigation into Bond has resumed, prompting him to question the validity of his plea agreement and seek judicial intervention.
The core of Salame’s legal argument is that the plea was secured through coercion, exploiting his relationship with Bond as leverage. He contends that such tactics by the prosecutors were improper and have tainted the legitimacy of his guilty plea. He is also required to pay substantial sums in forfeiture and restitution, totaling over $11 million. His prison term is set to begin on October 13.
