SK Hynix Introduces New DRAM Chip to Boost Power Efficiency

SK Hynix, the world’s second-largest memory chip maker, announced on Thursday the development of its first sixth-generation 10-nanometre dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip, designed to use less power than its predecessors. The new chip, named 16Gb 1c DDR5, offers a power efficiency improvement of over 9% compared to the previous generation. According to SK Hynix, this advancement could allow data centers to cut electricity costs by up to 30% amid the current surge in artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

The chip supplier, which counts Nvidia among its customers, aims to begin volume shipments of the new DRAM chip next year, positioning it as a potential solution for the increasing energy demands of data centers.
