OpenAI and Time Strike Multiyear Content Deal

OpenAI and Time have entered a multiyear content agreement, granting OpenAI access to over a century of Time’s archived and current articles, as reported by Axios.

This deal allows OpenAI to utilize Time’s content to improve its ChatGPT chatbot and potentially train its AI models. OpenAI can also display Time’s content within ChatGPT, citing and linking back to the original sources.

Additionally, Time will gain access to OpenAI’s technology to create new products for its audience. The collaboration aligns with Time’s mission to broaden access to accurate and trusted information, a commitment underscored by the removal of its website paywall last year.

The partnership follows OpenAI’s agreement with News Corp. in May, which allows the AI company to access content from notable publications such as The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, and The New York Post. Similarly, Reddit has also partnered with OpenAI to enable the training of AI models on its content.

However, the expansion of AI content usage has not been without legal challenges. OpenAI faces multiple lawsuits alleging copyright infringement.

The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, New York Daily News and others have sued OpenAI and Microsoft for alleged unauthorized use of their content in ChatGPT training data, seeking substantial damages. Similarly, several authors have filed lawsuits against OpenAI, claiming their works were used without consent for AI training purposes.
