Opera Incorporates Google’s Gemini into Its Browser

Opera has enhanced its browser capabilities by integrating Google’s Gemini AI models into its Aria AI assistant. This development allows users to access more current information and receive responses in a more conversational tone directly through the Opera browser, including the specialized gaming browser, Opera GX.

Introduced last year, Aria functions as an AI assistant designed to handle a range of tasks such as answering queries, writing code, and more. Unlike typical AI implementations that rely on a single model, Aria selects from multiple AI models to provide the most effective response for each specific task.

The latest integration incorporates Gemini, which Opera claims will provide users with highly current information and improved performance.

The Gemini suite comprises several large language models with varying sizes and capabilities tailored to different devices and requirements.

  • Gemini Nano: The smallest model, optimized for mobile devices.
  • Gemini Pro 1.5 and Gemini Pro 1.5 Flash: Medium-sized models
  • Gemini Ultra: The most advanced model, powering the Gemini chatbot for robust AI capabilities.

One of the notable features of the new integration is Aria’s enhanced ability to vocalize responses. Powered by Google’s text-to-audio AI, this feature allows Aria to read responses aloud in a manner akin to conversational speech. This capability is similar to ChatGPT’s Read Aloud function, which utilizes a text-to-speech model to vocalize chatbot responses.

This is not Opera’s first foray into utilizing Google’s AI technology. Earlier, in April, Aria introduced an image generation feature leveraging Google’s Imagen 2 model, enabling users to create images directly within the Opera browser.
