Spotify Brings Parent-Managed Kids Accounts to Free Users

Spotify is expanding parent-managed accounts for children to its free tier, giving more families a way to separate kids’ listening from parents’ recommendations and Wrapped results. The feature is now available to families in the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany and the Netherlands.

The update extends Spotify’s Managed Accounts feature, which was previously available only to Premium Family subscribers. Spotify’s announcement said the expansion is intended to give parents and guardians more control over young listeners’ music experience.

Managed Accounts are separate profiles for children, so their listening does not influence a parent’s algorithm, playlists or annual Spotify Wrapped. Children can still save favorite songs, build playlists and receive personalized recommendations.

Parents Get More Listening Controls

With Managed Accounts, parents can block specific artists and songs. Content labeled as explicit is restricted by default, and video playback is also turned off by default.

Interactivity features are limited as well. That means children using managed accounts do not have access to age-gated features such as Messages.

The feature offers more control than a regular Spotify profile without requiring families to use the more restricted Spotify Kids app. It lets children explore music inside the main Spotify experience while giving parents tools to set boundaries.

The expansion also reflects broader pressure on major technology platforms to improve child safety and parental controls. Regulators in the U.S., U.K. and Europe have pushed online services to provide stronger protections for younger users.

Setup Starts From the Family Account Page

To create a managed account, parents can go to their account page in the Spotify app, select “Add a Member,” and choose the option to add a listener aged under 13, or the local market equivalent. Spotify then guides the parent through setup, including choosing a display name and setting content preferences.

Parents can adjust settings later from the account page. Spotify said it plans to bring Managed Accounts to more countries over time.

The rollout gives Spotify a broader family-safety product at a time when music streaming is becoming more personalized and social. By separating children’s listening from adult accounts, Spotify can give younger users their own recommendations while helping parents keep control of content and privacy.
