Leaked Camera-Equipped AirPods May Use Low-Resolution Visual Data Instead of Recording Video

Apple’s rumored camera-equipped AirPods may use low-resolution cameras to give Siri visual information without allowing users to record photos or video, according to previous reporting from Bloomberg. The distinction could be important for Apple, which has long promoted privacy as a central part of its products while preparing a wearable that could otherwise raise concerns about covert recording.

Evidence of the device appeared in macOS 26.7 RC, the final test version of the software before public release. Researcher Aaron Perris found video footage showing a man holding up a book while wearing AirPods and apparently asking Siri about what he was seeing.

The accompanying audio says Visual Intelligence can make things in a user’s surroundings “savable” by letting them ask Siri to remember something for later. Code found in the software also references a “Hair Detected” warning that would alert users when hair is covering an AirPods camera.

The Cameras May Act as Visual Sensors for Siri

Bloomberg previously reported that the cameras are not designed to capture conventional photos or videos. Instead, cameras in both earbuds would collect low-resolution visual information that Siri could use to understand what is in front of the wearer.

That could allow someone to look at an object, such as the book shown in the leaked footage, and ask Siri about it without taking out an iPhone. Bloomberg also reported possible uses involving cooking ingredients and turn-by-turn walking directions.

The feature is expected to work alongside Apple’s updated Siri, which is scheduled to ship in September with iOS 27 and other software updates. Apple has not officially announced the camera-equipped AirPods or confirmed their features.

An LED Could Signal When Visual Data Is Shared

Bloomberg also reported that the AirPods would include an LED indicator that activates when visual information is being sent to the cloud. The light would give people nearby a visible signal that the earbuds are processing visual data.

Other AI wearables already use cameras to interpret a wearer’s surroundings, including Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses, Snap’s Specs, and upcoming Android XR glasses from Google and its partners. Those products have also increased attention on how wearable cameras communicate when recording or visual processing is taking place.

Apple’s reported design would differ if the AirPods are technically unable to record media and use their cameras only as low-resolution inputs for Siri. The company has not yet publicly detailed how visual data from the earbuds would be processed, stored, or controlled by users.
